Unless otherwise stated in the individual descriptions below, the following is true for all volunteer positions. Our preference are volunteers who can come to one of our offices (Delray Beach or West Palm Beach) and commit to a regular schedule no matter length of time or number of days per week. Training is provided and no experience is necessary. All volunteers receive orientation upon enlisting their time and talents. Data Entry Operator. Volunteer must have very basic knowledge of computer. This involves updating or entering new records of donors and program participants into pre-formatted screen on computer using keyboard and mouse. All essentials and thorough training are provided. No maximum number of volunteer hours needed, but a consistent schedule of volunteer day(s) and hours is requested. This volunteer position is only available in the West Palm Beach office location. Outreach Volunteer. This involves going to pre-scheduled health fairs throughout Palm Beach County to help distribute or disseminate information. Volunteer may have as little or as much public contact as they are comfortable with. This requires attending health fairs or exhibits which always occur during the day (some Saturdays) and usually for no more than 6 hours. Volunteer can stay for as long or short a period of time as desired. Volunteer contacted on an as-needed basis. As larger health fairs are scheduled volunteer may be called upon, but will not be held to a regular schedule. No manual labor or long standing required; a chair for sitting is always provided. Volunteer should have own transportation method and directions to health fair site is always provided. At least one staff person is always present. All tasks are easy and may include the following: - Observe fair attendees and visitors at the table and mark specific data on form - Serve finger foods/snacks to attendees visiting the table - Pass out brochures, palm cards, newsletters, and other collateral to attendees - Talk to interested attendees about agency services (training available if interested in speaking to public) Phone Call Greeter. We distribute specialized telephone equipment for individuals with hearing loss. To be certain the client is receiving the right phone for their hearing loss, we sometimes demonstrate and test the phone with new clients. This means we connect the phone and dial out to a live person while client is in the office so they can use the phone with our assistance. A Volunteer is that “live person” to whom we make the call. Volunteer will answer call from home and greet the caller, ask a series of questions and engage in a seemingly normal conversation with the caller. (Questions and/or topics are prepared and can be provided to the Volunteer.) Great volunteer position for someone homebound or not interested in traveling or being out in the community. Volunteer should like to hold phone conversations and must have a landline or digital phone service and possess a phone number. ** Volunteer’s phone number is never given out or shared with clients. The staff person training client always dials the Volunteer’s phone number. Volunteer’s phone number is kept confidential. Poster Distributor. Volunteer is responsible for helping us get the word out about our free phone program to hearing impaired by calling and visiting locations within the community to post posters advertising this program. Volunteer calls or delivers posters to ideal locations (see below) and ensures posters are pinned up in location by contact person at location. No minimum hours required, but this can be done within volunteer’s regular schedule, as posters can be delivered according to their own home or work schedule and/or as errands are run. If Volunteer makes contact with locations by phone and prefers poster be mailed, staff is responsible for mailing poster to site. No delivery necessary by Volunteer. Volunteer keeps track of locations supplied with posters by logging information on form and submits form and reports actions to staff for record keeping. Volunteer should have own transportation method. Posters (11”x14”), forms and any other necessary materials are provided to Volunteer by agency. Example locations to visit and deliver posters may include: doctors’ offices, hearing aid specialists offices, libraries, community centers, supermarkets, bookstores, churches, banks, bingo halls, HOA bulletin boards, etc. Stock Room Assistant. Volunteer will be receiving, verifying and unpacking shipments of telephone equipment, sorting and stacking boxes of different telephones in appropriate areas, listing, packing and shipping returns, and related tasks. Must be able to lift lightweight boxes, stand, bend, and write legibly. Appointment Secretary. This Volunteer position involves explaining eligibility requirements and setting appointments over the telephone. Requires clearly enunciated speaking voice, ability to hear well over the telephone, and patience in order to repeat complicated directions to those having difficulty hearing over the phone. A Volunteer with ability to set specific days and hours is required. If interested in any of the above openings, please call the West Palm Beach office at 561-802-3353.
